A Wee Bit of Housecleaning

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

In case you didn’t notice, I’ve done a little de-fragging of the sidebar here. Now you can actually find all those subscription options I mentioned earlier. The long-ass archive section? Yeah, it’s got its own page now.

Hopefully there’s a bit less clutter. I plan on doing a full-on redesign sometime in the near future, but that’s all contingent upon the time I’ve got. These days, I’m lucky I can get the episodes themselves out!

Sudden Core Dump

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

Um… sorry if the feed just took a major dump on your podcatcher. A few listeners told me they’d like to access old episodes via iTunes, so I upped the feed output from 10 episodes to 30.

Hopefully you figured as much before your podcatcher downloaded the entire High Orbit catalogue, or at least hopefully you’re a very, very patient listener.

Anyway, sorry if this caused any confusion. I don’t plan on changing the feed size in the future, so we now return you to your irregularly scheduled podcasts.

Microsoft: Yesterday’s Tech at Tomorrow’s Price

Friday, July 28th, 2006

For those that didn’t know, the UTF Revolution is powered by Mac OS. No, we’re not sponsored by them, we just can’t imagine living on a spaceship that crashes twice a day.

Microsoft seems to boldly embrace technology that Mac people have enjoyed for years, putting a new GUI over the top and doubling the price. Here’s a little taste of Windows Vista for you, courtesy of my pal Ollis:

“New” Features of Windows Vista on Google Video

Though all of these features have been part of the Mac OS for over a year now, a lot of them have been part of the Mac OS since 2002. I think most of my geek friends that bash the Mac do it because they know they’re just going to end up with second-hand technology in about four or five years.

Wearing seventh-grade fashion as a high school senior must really suck. Especially if you pay top dollar for it.

Got Sunblock?

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Sorry for yet another delay, folks, but the Captain just got back from a long vacation with no internet. Got some sun, drank some margaritas, dragged people behind a boat…

…and I come back to find that The Godfather Of Soul is making podsafe music now. Good God!

Fair Warning

Monday, July 10th, 2006

I’m about to try something wonky with the subscription feed, so if everything’s totally f’ed up today, it’s my fault. I mean, it’s Prodo’s fault. Yeah.

If this works, though, I’ll be announcing some cool new feeds that will give you exactly the High Orbit you want without having to download absolutely everything.

Update: Wordpress rocks my worlds. I’ve now got feeds set up for the following:

More feeds to come as I get them set up!

Two Love Notes From Your Captain

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

I’m Wired, But My House Isn’t:
Comcast hates my house, and we’re currently in the process of courting it back. Hence, no episode until I can upload it. I recorded the thing on Father’s Day, but it probably won’t get out until Wednesday night. God bless technology, eh?

Operation Horned Horse:
For those that haven’t heard, I plan on taking High Orbit all over the US, recording live performances in as many towns as I can travel to. Got a favorite band that’s playing 2,000 miles away from you this weekend? I want to send you the live recording, and others like it every week. Are you old enough to remember Led Zepplin or Grateful Dead live bootlegs? I aim for nothing less than to bring full-quality live shows to the fans, 52 weeks per Earth year.

Unfortunately, a show like this will cost money. More than Wayne’s World, but fortunately a lot less than MTV Unplugged.

This Is Your Captain Speaking

Monday, June 19th, 2006

Hey, I just got interviewed for the Musician’s Cooler Podcast! If you’re interested in how one makes a show or an album on a budget of emergency space rations and synthetic beer, definitely give it a listen. And let Dave Jackson know you’re there!

The RIAA Wants To Finger Your Kids

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Hat tip to Wil ‘Yes, That Wil Wheaton’ Wheaton for bringing us this news from the music front lines:

The RIAA is sending [cease & desist letters] to kids who post videos of themselves dancing to music on YouTube, because the kids — who are giving musicians free viral marketing — haven’t paid a license fee.

Let me tell you something… if any other freaks were out there sending threatening letters to your kids, you’d have them arrested. It’s that simple. An industry conglomerate who goes after 13-year-old girls should be treated no differently than any other criminal.

The Evil Empire Strikes Back

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

Sorry I couldn’t get a High Orbit episode out this week, folks, this space-captain’s day job is really becoming oppressive lately. Fortunately, things look a bit easier on the horizon. There shall be rock, and it shall be good. :)
